Medical Rehabilitation, Section 2. The Rehabilitation and Service Process for the Persons Served

The fundamental responsibilities of the organization are to effect positive change in functional ability and independence and self-reliance across environments, while protecting and promoting the rights of the persons served. The persons served should be treated with dignity and respect at all times. All personnel are able to demonstrate their awareness of the rights of the persons served as well as their own rights. The rehabilitation and service process is delivered by an integrated team that includes the person served. The process focuses on clarity of information, efficient use of resources, reduction of redundancy in service delivery, achievement of predicted outcomes, and reintegration of the person served into the person’s community of choice.  This curriculum examines how medical rehabilitation programs ensure a comprehensive program structure with staffing designed to maximize opportunities for persons served to obtain and participate in needed services and fundamentals of the rehabilitation and service process for persons served, including standards that address the unique needs of specific diagnostic categories and children and adolescents.  Also included is a course on the specialty standards for programs that deliver services via information and communication technologies.

    This 2023 course describes how effective staffing, structure, program/service design, and adequate resources can help support maximum participation of persons served and the achievement of quality outcomes. It also addresses skin integrity and wound care for persons served, and unique considerations for persons requiring respiratory management.

    • Lesson 2.A. Program/Service Structure (MED)

  • This 2023 course describes the rehabilitation and service process for non-home and community/non-evaluation/non-case management programs.  Unique process considerations for such programs that are also seeking optional specialty program designations for their pediatric, amputation, brain injury, cancer rehabilitation, spinal cord, or stroke specialty services are also addressed in this course.

  • This 2023 course provides an overview of the service process for home and community services programs, including admission, placement, transition, and discharge, and the composition and responsibilities of the service delivery team.  Unique process considerations for home and community services programs serving children/adolescents and for home and community services programs seeking optional specialty program designations for their pediatric, amputation, brain injury, cancer rehabilitation, spinal cord, or stroke specialty services are also addressed in this course. 

  • This 2023 course addresses the rehabilitation and service process for non-home and community services programs serving any persons with limb loss, acquired brain injury, or spinal cord dysfunction that are not seeking specialty program accreditation.

  • This 2023 course describes the rehabilitation and service process for both non-home and community/non-vocational/non-evaluation programs and optional specialty programs serving any children/adolescents that are not seeking accreditation as a pediatric specialty program.

  • This 2023 course focuses on standards related to delivering individualized services through information and communication technologies. Standards address written procedures; training provided to personnel, persons served, and families/support systems; considerations related to privacy/confidentiality; equipment maintenance; and emergency procedures.
